Porto Ferreira 2018 Vintage was awarded the top score by the renowned American wine magazine Wine Enthusiast. The 100-point rating confirms winemaker Luís Sottomayor’s confidence in 2018, a year he noted early on would be a reference year for the Vintage category.
Marked by a series of challenges in seemingly adverse conditions, 2018 ultimately produced truly classic, excellent Vintages. In the words of Luís Sottomayor, who was optimistic about this year’s huge potential and confident it would be declared, “2018 was one of the best Vintage years I have ever witnessed”. Not only does Porto Ferreira Ferreira 2018 Vintage 100-point rating lend credibility to this idea, it also establishes once again the quality and prestige of the Ferreira Vintages, and its unrelenting search for a unique consistency in quality.
This maximum distinction brings Ferreira’s most recent Vintage to the highest level of one of the most renowned wine magazines in the world. At the same time, “it recognizes the professionalism, passion and dedication of a large team that truly knows the Douro and its considerable potential, and that strives to improve at each vintage,” says Sottomayor, Sogrape’s head winemaker at in the Douro.
For Sogrape, the honour of the award is another reason to be proud of and confident in the consistent work the company is developing in its Port Wines. Fernando da Cunha Guedes, President of Sogrape, reveals that “everyone of us experiences these moments with excitement, since it acknowledges not only the wine’s creators but also all employees in the Sogrape family who are in love with this ‘art’.”
It is worth noting that this is the third top distinction awarded by Wine Enthusiast to a wine from Sogrape. The iconic Casa Ferreirinha 2008 Barca-Velha, and Sandeman Quinta do Seixo 2017 Vintage were also given full marks by the magazine.
Porto Ferreira 2018 Vintage is a true classic, notable in its elegance, harmonious character, and elevated complexity, doing justice to the style of this brand specialized in Vintages, with over 250 years of history and the most valuable heritage in Port Wine’s most renowned category.
Porto Ferreira Vintage: over 250 years of endurance
The idea of endurance is not new for Porto Ferreira and confirms the longevity of a brand with over 250 years old that owns the oldest and most iconic Vintage cellar in the sector, with references dating back to 1815. Thanks to the vision and deft business sense of Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, a native of the Douro and a woman ahead of her time, this legacy that has grown over time is preserved intact today.
More recent Vintages have also been deserving of excellent ratings in recent years, including those given by Wine Enthusiast, which has awarded 99 points to Porto Ferreira 2016 Vintage and 97 points to Porto Ferreira 2011 Vintage, the latter worthy of inclusion in the Top 100 wines selected by the magazine in 2013.
The 100 points now awarded to Porto Ferreira 2018 Vintage are the result of this path of endurance and excellence that define the house of Ferreira established in 1751, which always remained in Portuguese hands.
Sogrape has shared these same ambitions in its journey with the brand since 1987 – when Porto Ferreira joined its portfolio – so that it remains point of reference in the history of Portuguese wine and as the most distinguished ambassador of Port Wine in the world.
